Venice Sunrise

From the outside looking in, flying can seem like the best job in the world. The fact is, though, that flying can be stressful, boring, scary, or tiring. Sometimes it can be all of those things in one day.

But sometimes, it is the best job in the world. After thirty-three years, I still find moments of magic.

I took this photo last month. We were flying outbound south of Venice, Louisiana, very near where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

Wow. I mean, really, WOW! You have to right-click and open the picture up in another window, but when you do...! What a great shot!

I sometimes miss the old job, miss it terribly, miss those sunrises. I'd take off on mornings like the one in your photograph, and I'd have to have a little moment of silence for the awe-inspiring grandeur of it all. Witnessing such a thing would put me in a good mood for the rest of the day.

I don't get to see those incredible, majestic scenes anymore. Thanks for reminding me of what it's like, and showing everyone else what I could never put into words.

I'll tell you, man, I could go back. Sometimes I wish I hadn't left.
